Description:

Vestige is a third-year capstone film that explores how empathy can be evoked through non-verbal storytelling. Inspired by films like Wall-E and The Creator, the project investigates how cinematography and anthropomorphism can be used to create emotionally resonant robot characters without relying on facial expressions or dialogue.

The story follows two robots in a desolate world, focusing on their emotional connection and eventual separation. The characters were designed to reflect their emotional roles — one strong and protective, the other small and vulnerable. Through movement, silhouette, and framing, the film communicates their relationship and inner states without a single word.

Cinematography plays a central role in the storytelling. The film was originally structured from an omniscient perspective, but was reworked to follow the point of view of a single character. This shift created a more intimate and emotionally engaging experience, allowing the audience to align with the character’s journey.

The film uses lighting, colour, and rhythm to guide emotional tone, encouraging the viewer to feel rather than interpret. It reflects a deep understanding of visual storytelling and a commitment to exploring emotion through design and perspective.

Vestige is a quiet, reflective film that invites the audience to connect with characters not through what they say, but through how they move, see, and feel.
