Description:

Placed within the heart of the Domain Wintergardens is a temporary summer installation that imparts dynamism to a static formal landscape by facilitating movement and interaction.

The translucent 25-metre screen is installed on a bridge cutting across the sunken pool, an existing feature of the courtyard that constrains visitors to walk along lines of symmetry. The new screen disrupts the space, inviting visitors to refamiliarise themselves with an altered spatial sequence.

Inspired by the linear shadows already cast across the courtyard by the pergola and greenhouses, the screen is made up of a series of louvres that pivot around vertical shafts, affected by the wind and interacting visitors. This kinetic element ensures that although the screen disrupts the site it does not divide the space. As louvres rotate and activate one another through chain linkages, the change the spatial impressions of the site. Visitors are invited to weave and wander through the screen, as ephemeral sunlight marks change through shifting shadows.
