Description:
Moana Vā is a community-led collective created to support, empower, and celebrate Pacific Rainbow+ (MVPFAFF+, LGBTQIA+) peoples and their families. At the heart of the organisation is a name gifted by the community: Moana, for the ocean that connects all Pacific peoples, and Vā, for the sacred relational space we nurture together.
The logo and branding was born from this shared kaupapa — to create a visual identity that held meaning, mana, and pride. It needed to reflect Pacific cultures, honour rainbow identities, and create a strong symbol of belonging.
The final design beautifully balances cultural motifs with contemporary pride symbolism. The stacked bands of colour represent the spectrum of our communities — reinterpreting the Pride rainbow through Pacific tones and woven together like a mat, representing strength and unity. The central mirrored waves form a stylised vā, a flowing space between, suggesting relationship, care, and the movement of the ocean.
The typography is bold and rooted, drawing influence from Pacific patterns and natural forms. It’s a logo that can live anywhere — from t-shirts and flags to murals and social media — while holding deep cultural significance. It invites people in and says: “You belong here.”
More than a logo, this work is a love letter to our people. It has become a flag we gather under, a visual affirmation of pride, connection, and collective healing. It delivers social good not just through design, but through identity reclamation, community empowerment, and cultural visibility.
