Description:

Pōpopo, also known as the Wormporium is the new organic waste management system at Otago Polytechnic. They collect organic waste from OP and process it to produce organic compost for the gardens on campus.

My client was Finn Boyle, Resource Recovery Assistant and co-ordinator of the Wormporium required a visual identity as well as some educational content to market to staff and students. The main objective was to motivate behavioural change regarding waste by portraying it in a new light, as fun rather than intimidating.

My logo design was influenced by brands such as We Compost and OzHarvest. I wanted to challenge pubic thinking by hierarchically prioritising the Te Reo name, Pōpopo which means ‘biodegradable’ or ‘decay’. This needed to be delivered clearly to allow people to learn this new word.

I also designed infographic and signage concepts, organic bin labels and educational content to display around the campus. I wanted to create more awareness around what happens to our waste when we put it in the bin, as we can often feel so removed from this process.

My designs were also printed as signage at the Wormporium site and around the Otago Polytechnic campus.
