Description:

Knives Out’ responds to the ISTD brief ‘Putting Things in Order’ by systemically categorising the styles and uses of Western and Japanese knives.
Knives have changed the course of human history and are arguably one of the most important tools ever made. Half a million years ago stone was sharpened for use in basic food preparation. It has since been a weapon in combat and a tool for human survival. These days knives come in hundreds of different shapes, sizes, styles and qualities, all serving different purposes. Just think, there is probably not a day that goes by when you don’t pick up a knife to use in your day-to-day life.
‘Knives Out’ explores the battle between the quality of craftsmanship in knife making in Western and Japanese cultures. It outlines the different characteristics between the two, and leaves the viewer to decide which craft reigns supreme.
